My first thought when I came to this class was i was not on the right class. I sometimes feel afraid because it's an English Class and i was in the middle of people who speak English really well. I remembered my first task which required me to pronounce Dr. Seuss tongue twister. I think the part that i did was not hard because i took the easiest part among my friends in our group. In my opinion the most difficult part was how to pronounce correctly on every word you have in your paper. You also had limit time to pass that assignment.
The time moves pretty quick. I figured out something wrong in myself. It was actually about myself confidence. I was little bit shy and had really hard time to speak English fluently. The situation turned harder after we accomplished our first extemporaneous speech. Mr. Kenney asked some of major points of speeches. I was not able to answer his questions because i did not have any notes. Since then, i realize how important notes are.
November 2009, we went to the first debate talked about Referendum 71 which was about gay marriage. Honestly, i had no idea what it was since the term of Referendum was something new. We don't have that in Indonesia. So, I did research on the laboratory before going to the real debate. I missed some classes because of some reasons and when the debate notes due, i was not there. I did not prepare well on my first debate performance. It just made everything worst. I felt really bad.
The 2nd quarter began on December. One of my goals on the beginning of its was to improve my English skills, be more confidence to speak and also get better grade. The Speech and Debate class started with Poetry Out Loud Competition. Well, i was thinking it was gonna be another tough assignment. You have to memorize your poetry and bring it perfectly with good articulation and pronunciation. One thing I can do is learning from the master. I borrowed POL DVD's from Mr. Kenney and i tried to understand how to bring a poetry. Finally, time to compete began. I did it fairly good.
Poetry Out Loud Competition was my turning point from being a looser to be a winner. I started to build myself confidence to speak, learn some new stuff in this class, also work harder to keep my grade up. I am now on my mission to get 4.00 and i hope i can make it this semester.
Anyway, i would like to say thank you for each of you guys for helping me improving my English skills. I am lucky to be here. And i change my first thought about this class to be one of the best class that i have never had.
